Hell Online These are just a few of my favorite Doom II web sites. You can always find more by going to a search page and entering in the keyword "doom." ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/ - id's very own ftp site; you can download hundreds of .WADs. http://haven.ios.com/~bookers/Doom.html/ - Surphi's mac Doom II homepage. I got most of my graphics from this place. It has a lot of information on Doom II as well as a couple of .WADs already converted to the mac format. It also has quite a few doom links. http://doomgate,cs,buffalo.edu/~williams/ - The "official" Doom page. Has many links to other doom pages. http://www.umn.edu/nlhome/m206/chasa001/raven/ - The homepage created by the master level creater, Raven! You can download the Raven levels from here. To read interviews, late-breaking news on Doom, stunning pictures, tips and hints, and much more, download this e-zine. What can't be used with MacDoom: DEUSF: The existence of this file, or a general mention of a sprite patching step, means that you will need access to a PC or a PC emulator (e.g., SoftWindows) to make this WAD work. DEUSF is not the same as DEU, which is a utility for creating level maps. DeHackEd: Files that require application of a DeHackEd patch to the PC version of the Doom engine will not generally work at all with MacDoom, so you will want to stay away from these. Having access to a PC or SoftWindows isn't enough; these patches actually alter variables in the Doom program on the PC side. There currently is no equivalent for the Mac. If you're really determined, you might ask the WAD author to release a version that doesn't rely on DeHackEd, but the gameplay will differ from the PC version. Music Patches: As things stand today, you can't use 'em, and WADs containing music patches may cause MacDoom to crash -- even if you have music turned off. If you have access to a PC or SoftWindows, you may be able to get in with a tool like WinTex and delete the music from the PWAD. Otherwise, stay away unless the level looks too good to pass up. Note: Sound patches are not the same as music patches. WADs containing modified sounds should work seamlessly with MacDoom. Demo Patches: Don't avoid downloading WADs that contain new demos, but make a mental note that they are there. The MacDoom engine cannot play these demos, so when you load a WAD file containing new demos, you'll want to be there to start the game immediately. The time it takes to launch a new WAD file is generally not a good time to run to the bathroom or pop some nachos in the microwave. If you've got to go do something, let the game finish loading, and then press Command-P to pause the game. Otherwise, you may find your machine has crashed while you were out of the room. Even if you follow these guidelines, you'll still probably encounter some WADs that just won't work with MacDoom. These are rare, but do exist. The WAD may appear to start just fine, but you may crash a few minutes into gameplay. There's not much that you can do. Just grin and bear it. It's possible that the level pushes the envelope of what the Doom engine can bear just a little too far. Fortunately, there are plenty of great WADs that do work, so you can afford to throw back the few that fail without too much sadness.
